Verna Thompson elected MEABF trustee

AFSCME-backed Verna Thompson was elected Municipal Employees’ Annuity and Benefit Fund (MEABF) Trustee on Friday, October 27, representing city of Chicago employees and non-educational employees in the Chicago Public Schools.

Verna Thompson has worked at the Chicago Traffic Management Authority for 12 years. For the past 11 years, Verna has served as a steward for SEIU Local 73 where she has served on the contract negotiations team.

“As a city employee and union steward, I have learned to speak up when it comes to defending our hard earned benefits,” Thompson said. “City workers need to be confident that our pensions will be there when we retire. I am honored to be your voice and guardian on the pension board.”

Chicago is just starting down the right path on funding its pension funds. Verna Thompson will work to ensure Chicago properly funds the pension system to protect the benefits city employees earn and will rely on in retirement.
